SP Energy Networks has launched a $1.75 billion investment programme aimed at upgrading critical onshore transmission infrastructure across central and southern Scotland. The initiative supports the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 mission by enhancing grid capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The contracts, part of a broader $6.75 billion supply chain investment over the next decade, have been awarded to 19 suppliers—17 of which are UK-based—to strengthen domestic industry and create green jobs. Covered works include new and upgraded high-voltage substations, overhead line construction, and a range of design and electrical engineering services.
The contracts are structured as five-year partnerships, with the option to extend to ten, providing long-term certainty for suppliers and fostering investment in technology, skills, and innovation.
Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks, stated that the partnerships would help build a cleaner, greener Britain while delivering significant local economic impact.
Morgan Sindall Infrastructure was appointed sole contractor for the substation and overhead line work on the Denny to Wishaw Network Optimisation project, with a new joint office opening at Eurocentral this autumn.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP called the initiative "the clean power transition in action," highlighting its role in modernising the UK’s outdated transmission network.
The announcement aligns with ScottishPower’s wider commitment to double its UK investment to $30 billion by 2028, with two-thirds allocated to electricity networks.
