The UK government has shortlisted 27 hydrogen projects as part of the Second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2), aimed at cutting emissions and creating thousands of skilled jobs in key industrial areas across England, Scotland, and Wales.
Announced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the projects will advance to the next stage of the government’s hydrogen programme, with the potential to unlock over £1 billion in private investment by 2029.
Hydrogen is set to play a major role in decarbonising manufacturing processes in incustries such as clean power generation. These projects build on the momentum of HAR1, which allocated over £2 billion in funding to 11 projects, including the Bradford Low Carbon and Cromarty Hydrogen initiatives.
According to Industry Minister Sarah Jones, the investment will not only tackle emissions but also boost energy security and reindustrialise UK manufacturing regions. The announcement has been welcomed by industry leaders such as Dr Emma Guthrie of the Hydrogen Energy Association and Clare Jackson of Hydrogen UK, who highlight its role in scaling clean hydrogen and strengthening the UK’s position in the global energy transition.
