The UK Parliament has passed the Great British Energy Bill, establishing a new publicly-owned energy company aimed at accelerating the country’s transition to clean energy and boosting energy security.
Backed by £8.3 billion in government funding over the course of this Parliament, Great British Energy will invest in strategic clean energy projects across the UK. The company aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, stabilize energy prices, and generate economic benefits for local communities.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced the legislation’s passage during a visit to a Hull hospital where solar energy is significantly cutting operational costs. He confirmed £200 million in funding will go toward rooftop solar and renewable energy schemes for schools, hospitals, and communities.
In addition, a £4 million community energy fund has launched in Scotland, while nearly £3 million is allocated to renewable projects in Wales. These initiatives will support local clean energy development, with revenues reinvested into communities.
Great British Energy Chair Juergen Maier emphasized the company’s role in scaling investment and supporting clean energy supply chains, including offshore wind manufacturing.
The bill received legislative consent from all three devolved governments, enabling operations across the UK. Strategic priorities for Great British Energy will be outlined in the coming months.
