Ameresco, Inc. has announced a major contract with Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD) to construct a groundbreaking Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This 25-megawatt system, with a 100 megawatt-hour capacity guaranteed for 20 years, represents the largest standalone battery project in the Pacific Northwest to date.
Scheduled to commence construction by late 2024 and operational by late 2025, the BESS will enable Snohomish PUD to enhance system reliability and flexibility while mitigating energy price volatility. Under a 25-year tolling agreement, Ameresco will retain ownership of the asset, providing exclusive services to Snohomish PUD.
"This project signifies a pivotal advancement in the regional energy landscape," stated Nicole Bulgarino, Executive Vice President at Ameresco. "Our collaboration with Snohomish PUD establishes a scalable model for utility-scale storage solutions, emphasizing versatility in energy infrastructure."
John Haarlow, CEO/General Manager of Snohomish PUD, affirmed, "Energy storage is vital to maintaining grid reliability and affordability while achieving our clean energy objectives. We look forward to realizing the benefits of this innovative partnership with Ameresco."
The initiative underscores both companies' commitment to driving sustainable energy practices within Washington State, setting a precedent for future developments in renewable energy infrastructure.
