GE Vernova, a part of the GE Renewable Energy portfolio, has announced plans to invest $50 million in its Schenectady, NY, facility and hire approximately 200 new employees to establish a manufacturing assembly line for its 6.1 MW onshore wind turbine.
The assembly line will produce three key components for the turbine and is expected to be completed by summer 2023, with the first components ready by early fall. The investment and job creation are driven by the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act, which has revitalized the renewable energy market and increased demand for clean energy solutions.
The new manufacturing assembly line will be housed in the same building where GE Vernova currently manufactures steam turbines and generators. The company's expansion in Schenectady is supported by up to $2.5 million in funding from New York State's Empire State Development's Excelsior Jobs Program. GE Vernova's CEO, Scott Strazik, praised the administration for providing domestic content guidance and expressed the company's commitment to expanding its American manufacturing footprint. The investment in New York will strengthen Schenectady's role in driving the energy transition and create new opportunities in the region.
GE Vernova's 6.1 MW onshore wind turbine is designed for low-to-medium wind speeds and features an innovative carbon two-piece blade design, enhancing logistics and output in challenging environments. With a track record of nearly 10 GW of orders and over 4 million operating hours globally, GE Vernova's Onshore Wind business has been the leading provider of onshore wind turbines in the United States for the past five years. The company's investment in the Schenectady facility aligns with its broader commitment to sustainable energy and the transition to a cleaner, greener future.
GE Vernova, part of the GE Renewable Energy portfolio, is set to be spun off as a tax-free investment-grade entity in early 2024. The portfolio includes Renewable Energy, Power, Digital, and Energy Financial Services businesses, offering comprehensive solutions to support customers in their energy transformations and meet the growing demand for reliable and affordable green power.
