GE Vernova’s Nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has received a significant boost with the confirmation of a £33.6 million grant from the UK Future Nuclear Enabling Fund (FNEF), administered by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ). This funding underscores the UK Government's commitment to advancing nuclear power as a vital component of the nation's energy security and its journey towards achieving net zero emissions.
The grant, awarded to GE Vernova, aims to support the development of its BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Minister for Nuclear, Andrew Bowie, emphasized the importance of this investment, highlighting the pivotal role that small modular reactors play in the UK's ambitious plans for expanding its nuclear capacity and transitioning to cleaner energy sources.
Jay Wileman, President & CEO of GEH, expressed gratitude for the grant, emphasizing the suitability of the BWRX-300 SMR for the UK's decarbonization and energy security objectives. The grant will facilitate the acceleration of regulatory approvals and deployment readiness, as well as the establishment of a robust UK supply chain to support the deployment of these innovative nuclear technologies.
GEH has assembled a formidable team of UK-based partners, including Jacobs, Laing O’Rourke, Cavendish Nuclear, and Synthos Green Energy (SGE), to advance the BWRX-300 project. Alongside the FNEF grant, GEH will undergo the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process, further ensuring the safety and environmental integrity of the BWRX-300 design.
