Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has announced a significant development in the renewable energy sector near Houston.
The company has secured a power purchase agreement with a consortium of businesses for its Liberty Solar Project, a 100-megawatt solar farm set to commence operations next year. The project, located in Liberty County, will contribute renewable energy to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator grid, which serves 15 states across the United States.
Through an aggregated power purchase agreement, Recurrent Energy has entered into contracts with four different companies, including Wayfair and AutoDesk, for a duration of 16 years. Shawn Qu, CEO of Canadian Solar, expressed optimism about the agreement, stating that it will serve as a model for corporate procurement and facilitate the realization of more renewable energy projects with companies possessing strong credit ratings.
Texas has experienced substantial growth in solar energy developments in recent years, with the U.S. Energy Department predicting an addition of 7,700 megawatts of utility-scale solar power in the state this year. While the majority of this electricity will be integrated into the ERCOT grid, serving about 90% of Texas, the Liberty Solar Project represents a notable addition to the region. Furthermore, other solar farms, such as the project in Calhoun County by Swift Current Energy, continue to advance, contributing to the state's expanding renewable energy landscape.
