In a significant move towards its energy transformation strategy, Walmart has announced commitments to facilitate the construction of nearly 1 gigawatt (GW) of new clean energy projects across the United States. This initiative aligns with Walmart's dedication to sustainability and its goal of becoming 100% powered by renewable energy by 2035.
The commitments include investments in community solar initiatives and renewable energy purchase agreements. Through partnerships with companies like Pivot Energy, Reactivate, NextEra Energy Resources, EDP Renewable North America, and Invenergy, Walmart aims to drive positive outcomes by expanding access to clean energy, creating local jobs, and reducing emissions.
One notable aspect of Walmart's efforts is its focus on community solar, which is expected to result in around $6 million in annual savings for low-to-moderate income (LMI) households. These projects, spanning across six states, will bring clean energy online and provide substantial savings on energy bills for thousands of residential households.
Additionally, Walmart's renewable energy purchase agreements will add 842 MW of capacity to the grid, supporting progress towards its ambitious clean energy goals. By committing to enable 10 GW of new clean energy projects by 2030, Walmart is not only driving its own growth but also contributing to a more sustainable future for its customers, communities, and the planet.
Walmart's dedication to expanding clean energy capacity underscores its commitment to helping people save money and live better while promoting environmental stewardship. With these investments, Walmart continues to lead the charge towards a greener, more resilient energy future.
