GERMANY - The measures planned by 50Hertz should make it possible to transport up to 28 percent more electricity.
50Hertz has announced that they will transport more electricity than at regular times via initially four power circuits in its grid area from December 20 onwards. More overhead lines will be added next year. This is how they contribute to stabilising the power grid and alleviating possible grid bottlenecks during the cold season.
According to 50Hertz, the higher capacity utilization is part of the "Electricity Grid Optimization Action Plan" of the four transmission system operators in coordination with the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action. The measures planned by 50Hertz should make it possible to transport up to 28 percent more electricity. For the first four overhead lines in the area of Hamburg, Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, this corresponds to an additional power transport capacity of up to 2 gigawatts.
"With the temporary higher utilization of our lines in the next two winters, we are taking some pressure out of the overall system. We, the transmission system operators ourselves, put forward the relevant proposal in the special analyses known as the "stress test" for the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action, and the legislature acted quickly by introducing Paragraph 49b of the German Energy Act. In addition to these measures, we have already started to optimise power flows in the greater Hamburg area by partially commissioning new phase shifters, thus strengthening the resilience of the power system this winter," said Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz.
