Actom Power Transformers has become the first African company to receive a recommendation for ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) for its in-house transformer test laboratory.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in Africa’s power engineering sector, with Actom’s test lab now independently certified to meet international standards under IEC 60076 testing protocols. These include advanced testing capabilities such as impulse testing up to 2.4 MV, partial discharge diagnostics, and full factory acceptance tests.
The accreditation was celebrated during an Open Day at the company’s expanded Wadeville factory, following infrastructure upgrades that increased production capacity by 35%. These improvements aim to meet rising demand in utility, municipal, and renewable energy markets across Southern Africa.
Steve Jordaan, divisional CEO of Actom Power Transformers, stated that the company’s approach combines long-term reliability with full lifecycle support. Actom designs and manufactures power transformers ranging from 2.5 MVA to 315 MVA and up to 275 kV.
Wilma Muller, Sales and Marketing Manager, highlighted that the SANAS accreditation sets a new quality benchmark for transformer manufacturing and testing in Africa.
Actom holds over 50 approved designs with Eskom and has the largest installed base of renewable energy transformers of any local OEM, supporting projects like Redstone, Khobab, and Perdekraal.
