Actom, an electrical equipment and services supplier, is set to acquire a low-voltage product manufacturing facility in Kenya from its technology partner Schneider Electric.
The move is part of Actom's strategic expansion into East Africa, with plans to establish industrial hubs in the region. CEO Mervyn Naidoo envisions these hubs as platforms to introduce Actom's comprehensive portfolio of products and services to markets in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.
By utilizing the industrial platform in Kenya, Actom aims to penetrate the East African market, transferring intellectual property and establishing local manufacturing and repair operations. The company's extensive range of intellectual property covers low-, medium-, and high-voltage products, including transmission and distribution equipment, power generation systems, and associated products. Actom sees this expansion as an opportunity to contribute to the growth of both Actom South Africa and Actom Kenya, while leveraging the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
With the AfCFTA facilitating intercontinental trade and the economies of countries like Kenya and Tanzania experiencing significant growth, Actom anticipates a substantial demand for its products and services. The company plans to gradually increase its offerings based on market demand, with a focus on optimizing lifecycle costs and availability. Actom's commitment to providing comprehensive aftermarket repair and service solutions ensures the sustainability and performance of its products throughout their lifecycle.
The transfer of the manufacturing and assembly plant in Kenya from Schneider Electric to Actom enables Schneider Electric to concentrate on digital offerings, software, and services, aligning with its strategic priorities. The move allows Schneider Electric to expand its presence in Eastern Africa, enhance its service offerings, and foster partnerships with key technology players to deliver enhanced value and technology to its customers.
Actom's acquisition marks a significant step in the company's expansion plans, enabling it to establish a strong foothold in East Africa and contribute to the region's industrial growth.
