
Avangrid, Inc., part of the Iberdrola Group, has announced a $41 million investment to modernize the electrical grid in Ithaca, New York. The initiative includes major infrastructure upgrades, such as installing new transformers and capacitor banks to improve energy reliability and capacity in the region.
The five projects will serve over 42,000 New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) customers and create more than 150 local jobs. Key upgrades include three new substations and 22 miles of new transmission lines.
Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, described the investment as part of the company’s broader $20 billion grid modernization plan through 2030. Patricia Nilsen, President and CEO of NYSEG and Rochester Gas and Electric, noted that the project will increase system reliability and support community growth.
Highlights of the project include:

$28.4 million to install two transformers at the Fourth Street substation

$4.2 million for a capacity bank in Trumansburg

This investment builds on Avangrid’s $582 million spent on 265 gas and electric infrastructure projects in New York since 2023.
