U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) has introduced a bill to safeguard the availability of critical transformers.
The legislation, called the Protecting America's Distribution Transformer Supply Chain Act, aims to prevent potential shortages caused by proposed energy efficiency regulations. Barrasso argues that these regulations could worsen the existing shortage and increase costs for electric service.
The bill, which has gained support from industry stakeholders, including the National Association of Home Builders and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, would prohibit the Department of Energy from issuing revised energy efficiency rules for distribution transformers for at least five years. The legislation seeks to ensure grid reliability and security and allow time for manufacturers to address supply chain challenges. Barrasso discussed the proposed regulations during a recent hearing of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
The Protecting America's Distribution Transformer Supply Chain Act addresses concerns over the potential impact of energy efficiency regulations on transformer availability, aiming to provide stability and time for the industry to adapt and meet demand.
