BC Hydro will temporarily disconnect users of the Valemount substation from July 15th to August 2nd for essential upgrades to its power transformer. This process, termed "islanding," will involve sourcing electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) within the region, ensuring continued power supply to the Robson Valley.
According to Susan Edgell, spokesperson for BC Hydro, the transition between the substation and IPPs may result in brief, 15-minute disruptions at the project's commencement and conclusion. However, Edgell reassures residents that such occurrences are uncommon, with power transfers typically occurring seamlessly.
IPPs will supplement the grid with electricity primarily generated from high water levels, a capability spanning from early summer's freshet period through to late summer, although this timeline may be affected by current drought conditions.
The Valemount area hosts two IPPs, while McBride accommodates four, as listed by BC Hydro. Coordination among these producers, led by John Wheeler, ensures continuous power supply across the valley, encompassing communities from Dome Creek to Albreda to Mount Robson.
