Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy (MEW) is on track to award an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for its 300 MVA power transformer project at Sulaibiya station (W) in the Al Jahra Governorate by the third quarter of 2024. According to a source familiar with the project, the bid evaluation process is currently underway, and the contract is expected to be awarded by the end of September 2024.
The tender, which was issued on May 28, 2023, had its bid submission date postponed from July 11 to September 19, 2023. Two companies have submitted commercial bids: National Electrical Panels Company with a bid of $17 million and National Contracting Company with a bid of $16 million.
The scope of the EPC contract includes the design, engineering, materials procurement, quality management, factory inspection/testing, transport and delivery, installation, construction, site inspection, testing, and commissioning of the project. The contract also covers the supply and installation of HV/MV power cables and terminations, auxiliary power supply systems, control and protection systems, communication systems, air conditioning, fire detection and alarm, safety, fire protection, as well as civil, structural, and mechanical works.
With an anticipated completion date set for the fourth quarter of 2025, the project is a crucial part of Kuwait's efforts to strengthen its power infrastructure and improve the reliability of electricity supply across the region.
The successful completion of the Sulaibiya station project is expected to play a significant role in enhancing the overall performance of the power grid in the Al Jahra Governorate and beyond, marking another step in Kuwait's commitment to developing its energy sector.
