Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico's largest utility and a major player in North America, has significantly expanded its partnership with GenCell Energy. Following a successful initial deployment, CFE has ordered additional GenCell REX™ backup power units to enhance the resilience of its substations.
The expanded order, which comes under a contract awarded in December 2023, includes tens of additional hydrogen-fueled units. These units are equipped with GenCell GEMS™ AI-driven energy management software, providing climate-resilient, zero-emission backup power. The units will support CFE's substations with backup power lasting from 8 to 24 hours, a key upgrade from the previous duration.
Designed to operate under extreme conditions, the GenCell REX™ systems can function in temperatures ranging from -20°C to +45°C and high humidity. The technology's durability is complemented by minimal maintenance needs, requiring service only once annually.
Rami Reshef, CEO of GenCell Energy, highlighted the significance of this partnership, noting that the extended backup capability is critical in the face of climate-related disruptions. The collaboration aims to support CFE’s goals for enhanced substation resilience and clean energy integration, aligning with Mexico's 2030 Smart Grid objectives.
