In a major step towards fostering sustainability and environmental responsibility in the power systems industry, the CIGRE Study Committee A2 has announced the proposal for a new working group, naming senior industry expert Myles Margot as its convenor. The focus of the group is to create a unified framework for Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of Transformers. The aim is to assist various stakeholders — including Regulatory Bodies, Governmental Organizations, Customers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and Suppliers—in achieving environmental and sustainability targets.
The need for a standardized approach towards LCAs of transformers has emerged as a result of increasing demand from various stakeholders. This need is further driven by the global transition to flexible green energy. To facilitate this transition, there is a need to understand the complete life cycle of transformers, from cradle to grave, and to establish standardized evaluations, scoring systems, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
The new working group will address the following key objectives:
- Alignment: Create an integrated approach to guidelines, procedures, and standards from product to system level.
- Comparability: Establish a basis for the evaluation of transformers for manufacturers, customers, and regulatory bodies.
- Technological Influence: Investigate the influence of different technologies, manufacturing techniques, and operational procedures on the transformers’ life cycle.
- Environmental Sustainability: Develop best practices and/or a framework for CO2 reduction.
Scope and Deliverables
The working group will undertake the following key tasks:
- Define emission-baselines for materials and energy usage.
- Develop a Product Category Rule (PCR) specifically for transformers.
- Agree on standard parameters such as lifetime, load-factor, etc., for the PCR.
- Evaluate the environmental impact of the transportation of materials and transformers.
Deliverables:
- Annual Progress and Activity Report to Study Committee
- Technical Brochure and Executive Summary in Electra
- Electra Report
- Article in CIGRE Science & Engineering (CSE) Journal
- Tutorial
The working group plans to recruit members by the Q2/Q3 of 2023, followed by the development of a final work plan in Q3/Q4 of the same year. A draft Technical Brochure is expected for review by the Study Committee in Q2/Q3 2024, with the final Technical Brochure and tutorial slated for release in Q3/Q4 2024.
The proposal for this new working group signifies an essential step in the unification of practices and evaluations concerning the life cycle of transformers. As the industry moves toward more sustainable practices, this initiative could play a crucial role in shaping the future of power systems technology.
