Collett Transport, in collaboration with Hyundai Electric UK and National Grid, has accomplished the seamless delivery of two 178Te supergrid transformers to National Grid’s Biggleswade substation in Bedfordshire within just 7 days.
The project, which aimed to enhance the power capacity of the substation, saw each transformer measuring 9.0 meters long, 5.4 meters wide, and 5.0 meters in height, making for a total vehicle length of 66 meters. Utilizing their 250Te capacity Goldhofer girder bridge trailer, Collett Transport ensured the safe and efficient transportation of these vital components.
Prior to the transport, extensive planning and site visits were conducted by Collett’s Projects and Consulting Departments. This involved route surveys, swept path analysis reports, and coordination with local authorities to address potential obstacles along the 76-mile journey. With meticulous planning in place, the transport commenced, with Collett overseeing all ship chartering operations to ensure a smooth process.
Upon arrival at the Biggleswade substation, Collett's Heavy Lift Team executed the offloading process with precision, utilizing heavy-duty jacking and skidding equipment. The successful delivery of the first transformer marked a significant milestone, followed by the de-mobilization of the girder bridge to load and deliver the second transformer. This infrastructure upgrade will initially boost the substation's power capacity by 80mW, supporting future growth in the area.
