DNV, a global provider of classification, technical assurance, and advisory services, has successfully supported SN Aboitiz Power Group in the development of a 24MW/32MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) co-located with the Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant in Ramon, Isabela, Philippines. The project, which entered commercial operation in January, represents a significant step forward in the Philippines' energy transition towards a more sustainable future.
The BESS facility, designed for frequency regulation and balancing services, utilizes liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries connected to the grid via a 230-kV power transformer. This innovative energy storage system enhances power grid flexibility, mitigates power fluctuations, and optimizes energy distribution, thus playing a crucial role in supporting the Philippines' renewable energy roadmap, which aims for a 35% share of renewable energy in the power generation mix by 2030. DNV's experts from its Singapore and Philippine offices provided comprehensive support, including feasibility studies, technical design reviews, and inspection services throughout the project's development.
Brice Le Gallo, Vice President and Regional Director APAC, Energy Systems at DNV, emphasized the importance of such projects in the region's energy transformation. He highlighted that energy storage systems like the one at Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant are vital for maintaining grid stability, integrating renewable energy sources, and bolstering energy security. DNV's involvement underscores its commitment to driving innovative solutions and supporting sustainable energy initiatives in the Asia Pacific region.
