Trafo Power Solutions and TMC Transformers have successfully provided dry-type transformer technology for a large intake substation at a data center in the Netherlands. The project involved the supply of three 22.5 MVA transformers, which step down the voltage from 50 kV to 13.8 kV.
According to David Claassen, Managing Director of Trafo Power Solutions, dry-type transformers are typically used in lower-power applications. However, their use in this high-power substation represents an extension of their application into larger-scale projects.
The transformers were installed inside the data center, allowing them to be placed close to the indoor switchgear. An important aspect of the design was managing heat dissipation, which required the implementation of effective cooling strategies. The dry-type transformers are known for their high reliability and minimal maintenance, which are key factors in applications where downtime needs to be minimized.
This project highlights the potential for dry-type transformers in higher power and voltage applications, contributing to the growing range of solutions available for industrial and data center installations.
