Ergon Energy is undertaking a significant $50 million upgrade to its Mossman Substation, aimed at enhancing power reliability and supporting future growth in the Douglas Shire region. The upgrade involves the installation of a new 132kV transformer, raising the substation's capacity from 66/22kV to 132/22kV.
This investment, which is part of a broader Douglas Shire Network Upgrade, will not only improve power supply but also address safety concerns related to the aging infrastructure at the Mossman Substation. It will support more than 3,300 homes and businesses in the area. Additional works at Yalkula Substation near Mount Molloy and Craiglie Substation near Port Douglas will further strengthen the network’s reliability.
The upgrade also includes installing overhead fibre-optic cables across the transmission network to improve communication between the Mossman, Turkinje, and Craiglie substations, which supply power to over 30,000 customers.
Ergon Energy’s Far North Area Manager, Charlie Casa, emphasized that the project is a vital step in supporting the growing demand for electricity and improving response times during outages. Despite delays caused by severe weather, the project is on track to be completed by the end of 2025.
Residents will be notified of any planned outages to ensure minimal disruption as the work progresses.
