In a move to address overloading issues and improve power supply distribution, three crucial substations in Ghaziabad—Loni, Sahibabad, and Morti—are set to undergo a significant capacity boost. Currently operating at 132kv capacity, the substations have the potential for 220kv capacity, each equipped with two to four transformers ranging from 60 to 63 MVA.
The transformation will commence this week, starting with the Morti substation, which will receive its third transformer with a 60 MVA capacity. By early next year, both Loni and Sahibabad substations will follow suit, each getting an additional 63 MVA transformer. The cost for each transformer is estimated to be around Rs 6 crore.
Harishchandra Verma, executive engineer of the Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL), highlighted the impact of the additional transformer at Morti. Verma stated, “The 220kv Morti substation is currently operational with two transformers of 60 MVA capacity each. The additional 60 MVA transformer will increase the substation’s capacity from 120 MVA to 180 MVA.” Meanwhile, tenders for the ramp-up of Loni and Sahibabad substations have been issued, set to begin by February next year.
The Loni substation, currently operational with two transformers of 63 MVA capacity each, will see its capacity rise from 126 MVA to 189 MVA with the installation of a new 63 MVA transformer. Similarly, in Sahibabad, the addition of a fourth transformer with a capacity of 63 MVA will increase the 220kv substation’s capacity from 189 MVA to 252 MVA. According to Verma, these transformers are expected to be operational by April 2024, marking a significant milestone in Ghaziabad’s efforts to enhance its power infrastructure.
