
Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), a cornerstone of Maryland's energy landscape since 1816, is adapting to the evolving demands of the modern power grid. As renewable energy sources like wind and solar gain prominence, BGE faces the dual challenge of meeting increasing electricity demand while incorporating more sustainable power generation. With Maryland mandating that 50 percent of electricity come from renewable sources by 2030, BGE is strategically positioning itself to navigate this transition.
In Fairhaven, a rural community south of Annapolis, BGE encountered a unique reliability hurdle. Winter brought a surge in energy demand, primarily from electric heaters, exceeding the capacity of existing infrastructure. Recognizing the need for a solution, BGE partnered with Hitachi Energy to deploy a cutting-edge battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Fairhaven substation. This innovative approach not only enhances year-round reliability but also averts the need for costly upgrades to the electrical distribution network.
The newly installed BESS, operational since November 2023, plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the grid and improving local power supply reliability. By storing energy from various sources, including solar, the system provides a buffer during peak demand periods, effectively balancing the electrical load. Furthermore, the BESS offers grid support to PJM, the regional transmission organization, ensuring seamless electricity delivery to millions across 13 states and the District of Columbia.
This project underscores BGE's commitment to innovation and sustainability while aligning with Maryland's ambitious energy goals.
