Wales Giant electricity transformer to be landed on Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog
A massive 128-ton electricity transformer is scheduled to be landed on the Black Rock Sands beach near Porthmadog, Gwynedd in North Wales, following a successful operation in September 2020 that required the use of cranes and heavy-duty lorries. The transformer was then transported by road to the Trawsfynydd substation in Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia. The Porthmadog Harbour Consultative Committee recently discussed a similar operation expected to take place in June or July of 2023, which would involve the use of a cargo vessel to undertake a beach landing at Morfa Bychan. According to the harbourmaster's report, this approach helped to mitigate disruption to Porthmadog Harbour during the previous operation. Rolling roadblocks may be necessary to facilitate the transformer's transport, however.
