ZURICH, SWITZERLAND & ROME, ITALY — The new grid connection solutions and a long-term service agreement should help maintain grid stability and power quality for Italy’s plan to reach 55% renewable power generation by 2030.
Hitachi ABB Power Grids has announced that it will be supplying and servicing seven new high-voltage grid connections in Italy for the energy company Metaenergia Group.
The project will connect seven power plants currently on standby to the national grid, providing essential extra power in cases when variable wind and solar generation do not meet demand.
The power plants and grid connections, which are being rebuilt and overhauled on existing sites, are a part of grid stabilization measures to support Italy’s efforts to achieve a 55% renewable energy generation level by 2030.
“We are delighted to be working with Metaenergia to help Italy meet its energy transition targets, while safeguarding grid stability and power quality,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi ABB Power Grids’ Grid Integration business.
The company has worked closely with Metaenergia in the design process and has proposed solutions that allowed for the reuse of existing sites as well as their civil works, thus considerably speeding up the government permitting process and reducing costs and delivery times.
Once the plants and grid connections are commissioned, Hitachi ABB will secure grid connection availability and reliability with their digitalized life cycle management service agreement, which will include remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, and expert support.
The plants are scheduled to start operating by 2022.
