Hitachi Energy has officially inaugurated a newly expanded factory in Smedjebacken, Sweden, marking a significant step in its efforts to meet growing global demand for energy transition solutions. The ceremony was attended by Ebba Busch, Minister of Energy and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister, along with local government and business representatives.
The new facility spans 3,300 square meters and focuses on producing advanced power electronic valves for High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission and power quality solutions. Production is set to begin in early 2025. This expansion is part of Hitachi Energy’s broader strategy, announced in 2023, to invest approximately SEK 3.7 billion in its Swedish operations, including ongoing work at the Ludvika plant.
Andreas Berthou, Global Head of HVDC at Hitachi Energy, emphasized the importance of HVDC technology in advancing sustainable energy systems and highlighted the company’s commitment to diversity. Over 50% of the workforce in the Smedjebacken factory will be women, reflecting Hitachi Energy’s dedication to creating an inclusive workplace.
The expansion also aligns with the company’s history of innovation in HVDC technology, which has revolutionized power transmission since its debut 70 years ago. Hitachi Energy has implemented over 150 gigawatts of HVDC systems worldwide, solidifying its leadership in this critical sector.
