Hitachi Energy has announced a significant expansion of its composite components factory in Piteå, Sweden, which will include new machinery and a 50% increase in workforce. This expansion aims to meet the growing global demand for power transmission equipment, driven by the ongoing energy transition.
The factory produces composite insulators used in critical equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and power electronics, which are essential for the transfer of large amounts of energy across countries and long distances. With the expansion, the factory will increase production capacity, improve operations, and streamline material handling. The factory will feature three dedicated production lines for small insulators, large insulators, and cylinders for tap changers.
The investment will create around 100 new jobs, bringing the total workforce in Piteå to approximately 300 by 2030. Currently, about 200 people work at the factory. The expanded facility is scheduled to begin operations in the fall of 2026.
Tobias Hansson, Country Managing Director of Hitachi Energy Sweden, commented, “We see increased demand for our world-leading technology that accelerates the transition to clean energy around the world, and we are very pleased that we can invest and expand our production in Piteå.”
The expansion is part of Hitachi Energy’s broader growth strategy in Sweden and Europe, with additional investments in factories in Ludvika, Västerås, and Smedjebacken. These efforts reflect the company’s commitment to supporting the global energy transition while expanding its capabilities to meet market demand.
