Hitachi Energy has successfully delivered its first 66 kV WindSTAR™ transformer with natural ester insulation fluid, a major milestone in advancing offshore wind technology. The transformer, produced at Hitachi Energy’s factory in Zhongshan, China, is designed for use in Chinese offshore wind projects and represents a significant leap in both sustainability and efficiency.
The plant-based natural ester used in the transformer offers nearly 100% biodegradability, enhancing safety by reducing environmental risks in case of leaks and lowering the overall carbon footprint compared to conventional mineral oils. The biodegradable fluid is a step forward for offshore wind power technology, aligning with global goals for carbon neutrality and cleaner energy solutions.
WindSTAR transformers are specifically engineered for offshore wind turbines, both fixed and floating, to handle the harsh environmental conditions. This new transformer is part of Hitachi Energy’s OceaniQ™ portfolio and boasts enhanced capabilities with double the voltage capacity of earlier models, making it suitable for larger wind turbines. With over a thousand WindSTAR units already in operation globally, this latest innovation aims to reduce electricity losses and boost cost-effectiveness for offshore wind farms.
The company’s natural ester insulation fluid will facilitate the expansion of offshore wind capacity, a key area of growth as the global clean energy transition accelerates.
