Hitachi Energy has secured a record order from Svenska kraftnät to strengthen Sweden’s electricity grid. The multi-million-dollar deal is part of an 8-year framework agreement, involving the delivery of large power transformers and shunt reactors to upgrade existing substations and support the construction of new stations. This infrastructure expansion is critical to Sweden’s energy transition as the country works to double its electricity use to 300 TWh by 2045.
The contract will see the production of power transformers up to 750 MVA and shunt reactors of 400 kV at Hitachi Energy’s flagship factory in Ludvika, Sweden. Deliveries are set to take place between 2027 and 2032.
Tobias Hansson, Country Managing Director of Hitachi Energy in Sweden, expressed gratitude for the partnership, highlighting the importance of the technology in supporting Sweden’s electrification goals. Thomas Wennberg, Factory Manager at Ludvika, emphasized the record-breaking nature of the order and the company’s ongoing investments to increase manufacturing capacity.
This announcement follows Hitachi Energy’s recent commitment to invest $330 million in expanding its Swedish operations, which includes adding 2,000 employees by 2027. The deal represents one of the largest transformer and reactor orders in the company’s history.
