Hitachi Energy has announced a new collaboration with Tirreno Power to install Italy’s first eco-efficient 420kV SF6-free circuit-breaker at the Torrevaldaliga Sud Power Plant, located near Rome. The project is set to replace aging equipment at the power plant, with installation expected to begin in 2025.
The new solution, manufactured at Hitachi Energy’s Lodi facility in Italy, involves two of its EconiQ 420kV Plug And Switch Systems (PASS). This technology offers a sustainable alternative to conventional SF6-based systems, in line with Tirreno Power’s sustainability goals.
SF6, known as the most potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 25,000 times greater than CO2, has long been used in high-voltage equipment. Replacing SF6-based technology with EconiQ solutions represents a significant environmental advancement for power grid operations.
Giorgio Torelli, manager of the Torrevaldaliga Sud Power Plant, praised the collaboration, stating that the EconiQ circuit-breaker aligns with both the plant's technical needs and its carbon reduction objectives. Pieralvise Fedrigo, General Manager of Hitachi Energy's High Voltage Products in Lodi, highlighted the ongoing 20-year partnership with Tirreno Power, noting that this project will enhance the power provider’s environmental performance while ensuring reliable service.
The partnership between Hitachi Energy and Tirreno Power reflects both companies’ commitment to reducing environmental impact in the energy sector.
