Hitachi Energy has announced plans to invest approximately $140 million in upgrading and modernizing its power transformer factory located in Varennes, Quebec, along with other facilities in Montreal. The aim is to cater to the rapidly growing demand for sustainable energy solutions in North America.
Funded in part by the Government of Quebec through Investissement Québec, these projects in the Montreal area are poised to bolster the region's capacity to meet the escalating demand for transformers, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, data centers, and industrial electrification.
Bruno Melles, the Managing Director of Transformers at Hitachi Energy, highlighted the significance of these investments, stating, "In addition to our global investments, the support of the Quebec Government will help to address North America’s rising demand for transformers to support fast-growing sectors like renewable energy, data centres, and industrial electrification."
The Varennes facility stands as Hitachi Energy’s primary manufacturing hub in North America for large power transformers. It plays a vital role in bolstering national and regional power grids while also servicing utility-scale renewable energy projects.
A pivotal aspect of Hitachi Energy's expansion plans includes the establishment of a new onsite transformer testing and certification facility. This initiative is deemed critical in meeting the burgeoning demand for sustainable energy solutions in Quebec. The additional 130,000 square feet of space is expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
The Varennes manufacturing facility has been operational since 1971, covering an area of 300,000 square feet and providing employment to approximately 330 individuals.
This investment underscores Hitachi Energy's commitment to driving advancements in sustainable energy infrastructure and supporting the transition towards a greener future in North America.
