Last week's severe storms caused extensive damage, resulting in days-long power outages for many Hoosiers. Utility companies Duke Energy and AES Indiana worked diligently to restore electricity, but a consumer advocacy group, Citizens Action Coalition (CAC), asserts that more could have been done to prepare for the outages and is urging a state investigation.
The storms, including a declared derecho, affected a significant number of Duke Energy and AES Indiana customers. Widespread damage to power lines, poles, and power transformers complicated restoration efforts. CAC is urging affected customers to file complaints with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) to seek compensation for the extended outages and is calling for stronger measures by the utilities to prevent future prolonged power disruptions.
CAC emphasizes the importance of holding utilities accountable for their response and preparation. While the IURC lacks the authority to impose fines, it can conduct investigations. CAC also recommends incentivizing rooftop solar and promoting transparency by making utility performance reviews accessible to the public. Duke Energy and AES Indiana are undertaking long-term initiatives to replace aging infrastructure and enhance grid resilience, including addressing damaged power transformers.
