Hydro Ottawa has recently completed its largest municipal transformer station, the Cambrian station, just west of the 416 highway and close to Half Moon Bay in Barrhaven. This transformer station marks a pivotal moment for the community, addressing the growing electricity demands spurred by rapid suburban growth.
Originally proposed in 2008, the project underwent extensive consultations and environmental risk assessments before being energized in April 2022. With a capacity of 90 megawatts, equivalent to powering 32,000 single homes annually, the Cambrian station significantly alleviates pressure on existing stations operating near capacity, crucial for Barrhaven's future as electricity needs are expected to double in the next two decades.
The impact of the Cambrian station has already been tangible, especially during extreme weather events like the 2022 Derecho and the 2023 Tornadoes, where it played a pivotal role in preventing prolonged power outages. Moreover, the station's location incorporates ecological considerations, boasting one of the largest pollinator meadows in eastern Ontario and a 4-acre reforestation area with 2,750 trees, serving both environmental and functional purposes.
Hydro Ottawa projects the Cambrian station to operate for at least 50 years, highlighting a commitment to long-term sustainability and resilience. This initiative exemplifies the balance between development and environmental stewardship, setting a precedent for future projects in Barrhaven and beyond.
