The Meghalaya Power Department has launched significant reforms to enhance electricity reliability and efficiency across the state. According to Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner and Secretary of the Power Department, these initiatives include infrastructure upgrades and the introduction of advanced technologies.
One of the key advancements is the deployment of covered conductor cabling in parts of Shillong, aimed at improving safety and durability. To address voltage issues and reduce disruptions, the department is also installing new transformers and upgrading existing power lines.
“We are taking schedule shutdowns for maintenance, which is a routine activity,” said Goyal. “Additionally, we are upgrading the capacity of lines, installing new lines, and undertaking other system improvements.”
Efforts are being made to minimize the impact of scheduled shutdowns on urban consumers by streamlining restoration processes and deploying additional manpower. Statewide, approximately 700 to 800 new transformers are being added to meet growing electricity demand.
The department is also addressing right-of-way challenges to ensure timely implementation of projects. In newly developed areas, around 50,000 households are expected to gain electricity access through infrastructure upgrades.
These initiatives aim to create a robust power infrastructure that supports sustainable and reliable energy for Meghalaya residents.
