Itron, Schneider Electric, and Microsoft are expanding their collaboration to develop an advanced Grid Edge Intelligence solution that enhances utility grid visibility and control. A key focus of this initiative is addressing the growing challenge of transformer shortages, which have resulted in long lead times for critical infrastructure components.
The collaboration integrates Itron’s distributed intelligence technology, Schneider Electric’s Digital Grid solutions, and Microsoft’s AI and data platforms. This approach enhances grid operations by providing real-time data exchange and predictive analytics, allowing utilities to optimize transformer utilization, extend equipment lifespan, and manage increasing energy demands more effectively.
Transformer supply constraints have created significant challenges for utilities, with lead times extending up to two years. By leveraging non-wires solutions, utilities can maximize existing infrastructure capacity by up to 20%, reducing dependence on new transformer installations. The solution also supports transformer-to-meter mapping, load flow accuracy improvements, volt-VAR optimization (VVO), and enhanced forecasting for distributed energy resources (DERs).
As electricity demand continues to rise and grid infrastructure becomes more complex, the ability to monitor and manage transformer performance in real-time will be essential for maintaining grid reliability. The Grid Edge Intelligence solution will provide utilities with critical insights to improve power distribution and mitigate disruptions caused by transformer limitations.
