In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's energy resilience, Japan has committed to delivering seven high-voltage transformers and five gas turbines, announced Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa during a meeting with Ukrainian counterpart Herman Halushchenko. The equipment, financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), aims to secure uninterrupted power supply for over six million Ukrainians in regions affected by targeted Russian strikes on energy infrastructure.
Expressing solidarity, Minister Kamikawa commended Ukraine's unwavering determination, stating, "Ukrainians continue to fight for their nation, their families, and their bright future, despite all the unjustified attempts to stop this." Japan sees itself as a reliable partner in these challenging times and acknowledges the nation's resilience.
The power transformers were procured with EBRD funds, and the delivery is made possible through collaboration between Japan and the United Nations Development Program of Ukraine (UNDP). Gas turbines, purchased by Japan, will be supplied through the UNDP and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Minister Kamikawa hinted at additional support, announcing, "The provision of two additional autotransformers through UNDP for efficient and stable power supply is to be announced in the nearest future." Already, Ukraine has received 1,200 generators, 1,000 power units, 500 generators, and six mobile power supply vehicles through JICA to aid government institutions and emergency rescue services.
The Japanese Foreign Minister's visit also included meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, reinforcing diplomatic ties. Japan further demonstrated its commitment by allocating $37 million to the NATO trust fund for drone detection systems in Ukraine.
