In a significant move towards fostering a more electric vehicle (EV)-friendly infrastructure, the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has removed the mandatory requirement for electrical transformers at fuel stations across the state. The exemption, effective immediately, comes as a relief for oil companies, as they will no longer be compelled to install transformers on their premises. This groundbreaking decision is anticipated to pave the way for a rapid expansion of EV charging points, particularly at highway petrol bunks, transforming them into vital hubs for electric mobility.
The KERC's decision marks a strategic shift from the previous mandate, which required establishments with over 800 sqft of area or power consumption exceeding 35 kW to install electrical transformers. This posed a unique challenge for refuelling stations, caught in a dilemma between the Electricity Act and the safety norms of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). The revision in guidelines now clears the regulatory hurdles, enabling fuel stations to fast-track the installation of much-needed EV charging points.
Mahantesh Bilagi, the Managing Director of Bescom, expressed optimism about the impact of this decision, stating, "The KERC move will be a shot in the arm for setting up EV charging infrastructure across Karnataka as petrol bunks on all highways can serve as major sources of charging points for vehicles." With this exemption, the fuel stations are expected to emerge as crucial contributors to the state's evolving electric mobility landscape, addressing the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
As oil companies collectively communicated their impediments to Escoms and sought a resolution, the KERC's thoughtful consideration and subsequent exemption demonstrate a collaborative effort towards a cleaner and greener future. This progressive step not only facilitates the growth of EV charging infrastructure but also aligns with broader environmental goals, positioning Karnataka as a leader in sustainable transportation.
