SWEDEN – A power transformer manufactured by Končar Power Transformers Ltd. – A Joint Venture of Siemens Energy and Končar (KPT) was successfully energized at the Markbygden 1101 wind farm.
Markbygden 1101 is Europe’s largest land-based wind farm and one of the largest wind power projects in the world. Located outside of Piteå, northern Sweden, the wind farm extends over 450 km2 (173.7 mi2) connected by a 700-km (434-mile) long road network.
The project is divided into three main phases, with several sub-projects working simultaneously with assembling the wind turbines. The electricity that the wind turbines produce is transmitted to nearby 400 kV cables and is distributed to consumers through the national grid.
In the final stage of a long period of projects, large power transformer was energized at the Markbygden substation. Manufactured by Siemens / KPT, the almost 500-ton unit enables a further 800 MW of renewable energy to be transported to end users, Markbygden Net said in a media release.
The commissioning team consisted of experts from WT Energiesysteme, Lapplands Elnät, W3 and Siemens, as well as a whole team from B+S Grid Solutions.
