In an effort to bolster energy infrastructure, a new 155-tonne Super Grid transformer will arrive at the National Grid's West Weybridge substation in New Haw on Sunday, 17 November 2024. This significant piece of equipment, comparable in weight to 25 African elephants, is part of a comprehensive upgrade to modernize and reinforce the local power infrastructure.
The transformer is scheduled to depart from the Port of Tilbury late on Saturday, 16 November, making its way to New Haw in the early hours of Sunday morning. Traveling via the M25 at speeds of up to 12 mph, it will be escorted by police, with temporary adjustments to street furniture planned along the route to accommodate its size. The carefully coordinated route, developed in partnership with highway authorities, aims to minimize disruption for local residents.
Mark Ellis, Project Manager for National Grid, said, “This transformer movement has been many months in the planning and we work hard to minimize any disruption that deliveries of this kind can cause.” He added that efforts will be made to keep noise levels down as the transformer is delivered.
Once operational, the transformer will play a critical role in adjusting voltage levels, enabling safe energy delivery to homes and businesses in the area. This upgrade supports National Grid's commitment to ensuring reliable power distribution through efficient and modern infrastructure.
