National Grid and principal contractor Murphy have energized a new 132kV substation in Barking, East London. The facility will provide power to homes, businesses, and rail services, including supporting the Barking Riverside regeneration project.

The substation connects UK Power Networks (UKPN) to National Grid’s high-voltage transmission network, distributing electricity to 20,000 homes. It also supplies power to a nearby Network Rail feeder station, ensuring electrified train routes benefit from the infrastructure upgrade.

Replacing a 1950s-built facility adjacent to the site, the new substation features 17 bays and additional capacity for future upgrades. This marks a significant reinforcement to East London’s electricity supply, enhancing reliability as demand grows.

The project complements National Grid's London Power Tunnels 2 initiative, where Murphy played a pivotal role. Liam Corr, Murphy's managing director for energy, highlighted the project’s importance in securing energy supplies for the community. Laura Mulcahy, project director at National Grid Electricity Transmission, emphasized its role in supporting East London's energy transition. Andrew White, UKPN's program manager, commended the partnership that brought this essential infrastructure online.
