National Grid is set to deliver two large supergrid transformers to its new Little Horsted substation in Uckfield on Sunday, October 27, 2024. This delivery is part of an effort to enhance connections for UK Power Networks, ensuring secure electricity supplies for the surrounding area.
The transformers, each weighing 178 tonnes, will travel approximately 24 miles in convoy from Shoreham Port in Brighton to the substation. Their transport, scheduled to leave the port at around 8 AM, is expected to take between 6 to 8 hours. Given the size and weight of the transformers, they will be transported on specialized vehicles with a police escort, maintaining a maximum speed of 12 mph.
Transformers are essential for the reliable transmission of electricity, as they adjust voltage levels to facilitate efficient energy distribution from power generators to homes and businesses. The addition of these transformers will help futureproof electricity supplies in the region, supporting the ongoing construction of the Little Horsted substation.
To minimize disruption during this critical operation, the route has been meticulously planned in collaboration with local highway authorities and the police. Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, as some traffic may be briefly halted for the convoy, and certain street furniture may be temporarily removed to accommodate the delivery.
Paul Alchin, National Grid Project Manager, stated, “These transformer movements have been many months in the planning, and we’ve worked hard to minimize any disruption that large deliveries of this kind can cause. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the local community during this vital work to futureproof electricity supplies and meet local demand.”
