As the summer months approach, Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (PESU) is making strategic moves to meet the anticipated peak electricity demand, projected to surpass 700 megawatts (MW). PESU, responsible for supplying power to Patna and its peripheries, is undertaking maintenance work and installing new distribution transformers, grids, LT lines, and feeders to ensure residents have uninterrupted power supply.
Shriram Singh, General Manager of PESU, outlined the comprehensive plan which includes the installation of around 500 new transformers spanning from Dak Bungalow to Danapur and Gandhi Maidan to Didarganj. The initiative aims to replace old and damaged transformers, as well as enhance the distribution system by adding three new power grids at strategic locations such as Digha, Board Colony, and Mithapur.
The tender for this massive undertaking has been awarded to Ashoka Buildcon Limited, a company tasked with not only installing new transformers but also upgrading cable wires and aerial bunched (AB) cables. The anticipated outcome of this initiative is a substantial increase in power supply, with an additional 30MW expected to be added to the existing capacity of 1,705MW per day.
Acknowledging the significance of these upgrades, Singh emphasized the necessity of these measures given the projected increase in peak power demand. Last year, the demand peaked at 650MW during summer, and with temperatures and weather conditions playing a crucial role, the demand is expected to exceed 700MW this year.
The comprehensive effort involves 500 personnel, including engineers and maintenance teams, with plans to augment the workforce in April to address areas with higher demand and repair needs. With these proactive measures, PESU aims to ensure that Patna residents experience minimal disruptions in their power supply during the upcoming summer season.
