Prysmian Group has secured a significant energy transmission project with the receipt of a Letter of Award (LoA) for the Peninsula-Baleares 2 interconnection. This major initiative aims to connect Mallorca with the Spanish mainland power grid, with the project value expected to exceed €0.5 billion.
Prysmian and Red Eléctrica, Spain's transmission system operator, will enter into exclusive negotiations on the contract, with finalization anticipated by the end of 2024. The project involves the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of two High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) 250 kV MI single-core cables. Additionally, Prysmian will supply fiber optic cables for telecommunications and monitoring purposes, covering both the submarine and land sections of the interconnection.
This endeavor is set to enhance the quality and reliability of the Balearic Islands’ electricity supply, addressing the islands' demand and reinforcing their power grid. Hakan Ozmen, EVP Transmission at Prysmian, emphasized the significance of the project: “Prysmian continues to strengthen its role in developing interconnections with this second Baleares Peninsula project. We will use the same proven MI cable technology from the Peninsula Baleares 1 installation. This award reflects our enduring partnership with Red Electrica and our ongoing commitment to efficient and sustainable power transmission in the Mediterranean. Our past projects with Red Electrica include connections such as Ibiza-Formentera, Lanzarote-Fuerteventura, and others.”
This project follows Prysmian’s recent milestone of installing an HVDC cable at a record depth of 2,150 meters for the Tyrrhenian Link and continues its expansion of the Mediterranean energy infrastructure.
