Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) has completed a $23 million modernization project at its substation in Sodus, enhancing energy reliability for over 3,300 customers in the region. The upgrades are part of Avangrid's broader $7 billion initiative to modernize New York’s energy infrastructure by 2030.
Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, emphasized the urgency of these improvements, stating, “With the need to upgrade and modernize our nation’s energy infrastructure, we are moving aggressively to invest in this critical energy need now.” These efforts aim to provide a stronger and more dependable grid for local communities.
Located at the corner of Green Street and Belden Avenue, the newly upgraded substation features advanced technologies such as a high-efficiency transformer and gas-insulated switchgear. This infrastructure replaces outdated equipment dating back to 1966 and supports remote monitoring 24/7, enabling faster response times and improved outage recovery.
Dan Ingersoll, Mayor of Sodus, expressed appreciation for the project, highlighting both the community benefits and the removal of blighted properties. Additionally, Pam Helming, New York State Senator, noted that the upgrades would help meet the growing energy demands of the region and ensure reliability as the state moves toward an all-electric future.
The substation’s new 12kV circuits will address the rising electricity demand, providing increased voltage capacity. Brian Manktelow, New York Assemblyman, commended the investment, recognizing its importance in supporting regional growth and the state’s renewable energy goals.
The substation upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to enhance New York’s aging energy infrastructure and to prepare for the growing challenges of energy usage and environmental change.
