The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) has partnered with the Rwandan government to finance an electricity delivery project in the Kamonyi District. The $20 million concessional development loan agreement was signed in Kigali, Rwanda's capital, by SFD's CEO, Mr. Sultan bin Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, and Rwanda's Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Uzziel Ndagijimana. The project aims to establish a network of medium and low-pressure power lines and distribution transformers to provide electricity to households, public institutions, and social facilities in the underserved Kamonyi District.
This initiative is part of Rwanda's broader Energy Access and Quality Improvement program, which seeks to enhance access to reliable and cost-effective electricity services in various underserved areas of the country. By benefiting around 60,000 people, the project will stimulate economic, agricultural, and industrial activities, generate employment opportunities, improve livelihoods, support Rwanda's economic growth, and promote sustainable living. The CEO of SFD, Sultan Al-Marshad, emphasized the significance of the project in promoting sustainable development and commended the longstanding relationship between SFD and Rwanda.
The financing provided by SFD will significantly contribute to increasing electricity access in the Kamonyi District, ultimately helping Rwanda achieve its goal of providing electricity to all citizens by 2024. In addition to the electricity delivery project, SFD has been actively involved in Rwanda's development efforts, financing various critical projects and programs, including the renowned King Faisal Hospital. The support from Saudi Arabia through SFD has been instrumental in advancing Rwanda's developmental sectors and working towards sustainable development goals.
