Toshiba Group has announced a substantial investment of $61 million (₹500 crore) to enhance the manufacturing capacity of power and distribution transformers at its Toshiba Transmission and Distribution Systems-India (TTDI) plant near Hyderabad. The expansion will see a 1.5 times increase in production capacity by March 2027, reflecting the company's strategic focus on the power transmission and distribution sector amid rising global demand for T&D equipment driven by renewable energy growth.
The investment will bolster TTDI's assembly and test line capabilities for power and distribution transformers, specifically targeting the rising demand for 400kV and 765kV transformers in the Indian market. Hiroshi Furuta, CMD of TTDI, emphasized that this move supports the Make-in-India initiative and aims to enhance both domestic operations and international exports. TTDI has already supplied India-made transformers to over 50 countries.
The expansion plan includes the creation of a state-of-the-art facility for Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) steel processing, enhancing vertical integration. Additionally, a new manufacturing facility for surge arresters will be established in the coming months, further augmenting TTDI's production capabilities.
