Trafo Power Solutions, industry-leading dry-type transformer supplier, has successfully delivered 40 dry-type mini-substations and seven standalone ring main units to a major copper operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project, hailed as a mega success by David Claassen, Managing Director at Trafo Power Solutions, required meticulous design and planning to meet the demanding lead times driven by the mine's rapid expansion.
Each mini-substation, ranging from 630 kVA to 1,600 kVA capacity, features a control system for remote monitoring of protection functions. Designed and manufactured in South Africa, these compact units underwent a streamlined production process, ensuring fast-track delivery in batches every 10 days.
One notable feature is the inclusion of arc protection, shutting down units in the event of an arc occurrence, preventing further damage. The dry-type transformers, ideal for the stringent safety regulations in the underground mining environment, use air for cooling, minimizing fire and environmental risks.
Trafo Power Solutions, handling both electrical and mechanical design, prioritized a limited footprint through air-to-air heat exchangers. These transformers, encapsulated with cast resin, ensure reliability in high humidity environments.
Claassen underscores the early engagement with the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) firm, which facilitated effective project management. All units were delivered by the end of 2023, meeting project timelines.
In Claassen's words, "The detailed design and variety of solutions within the complete contract package really highlights the technical capability of the Trafo Power Solutions team." He emphasizes the growing popularity of dry-type technology in mining due to its safety, reliability, and low maintenance requirements.
