Two high-voltage transformers have arrived at Stanwell Power Station, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the Stanwell Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). These transformers, each weighing 118 tonnes, traveled over 2000 kilometers from Melbourne, escorted by police, pilot vehicles, and support trucks.
The Stanwell BESS, once operational, will be capable of discharging 300 MW of energy into the National Electricity Market for up to four hours, supporting grid stability as the energy sector transitions to renewables.
Stanwell Manager Central Generation Angie Zahra emphasized the project's steady progress, highlighting ongoing site preparations such as earthworks, drainage, and concrete foundation pouring.
“These transformers are the first major equipment to arrive, and the first of the 324 Tesla Megapack units will begin arriving in mid-2025,” Zahra said.
The Stanwell BESS is scheduled to commence operations in May 2027. Large-scale batteries like this play a key role in stabilizing the grid by storing excess energy when supply is high and discharging when demand increases, ensuring reliable and sustainable energy.
