THE NETHERLANDS — Two power transformers manufactured by Royal Smit Transformers for the connection of the Hollandse Kust (North) offshore wind farm are ready for installation.
Last week the units were transported by ship to Hoboken. There they will be installed in the superstructure of the platform at the ENGIE Fabricom site in three weeks.
In Waalkade in Nijmegen, the heavy lifting and transport company Mammoet loaded both 400 MVA/230 kV units for transport. Each transformer is about 29 ft long, 18 ft wide and 22 ft high.
Royal Smit previously supplied TenneT with four identical transformers. “These are currently being assembled by our team on the platforms that TenneT is having built in Dubai for Hollandse Kust (south Alpha) and (south Beta)”, said project manager Michel van Mullem on behalf of Royal Smit.
In the coming years, TenneT will gradually connect the new offshore wind farms to the national high-voltage grid. For this purpose, the grid operator is installing wired 'sockets at sea'.
As project leader for the system integration of the high-voltage installation, Arthur Rondeel ensures that everything that is currently being built for the connection of the wind farms will soon become an integral and properly functioning part of TenneT's high-voltage grid.
“The platform for Hollandse Kust (North) will have a capacity to bring 700 MW of green electricity ashore. This corresponds to the annual consumption of all households and industry in the city of Amsterdam,” said Rondeel.
