A new power transformer has been installed at Orion’s Springston Zone Substation, bolstering the reliability of Christchurch’s electricity network. Orion, responsible for managing power distribution across central Waitaha Canterbury, commissioned the project to support increasing energy demands.
The transformer, rated 66KV/11KV, 11.5/23MVA, was designed and manufactured at Tyree Group’s Australian facility. Tyree NZ LTD managed the shipping process, overseeing importation and transportation to New Zealand.
On-site, Tyree NZ worked alongside Connetics to coordinate unloading, site assembly, and acceptance testing before handing the unit over to Orion. The transformer was successfully energised last week and is now operational, enhancing grid resilience and supporting thousands of homes and businesses.
Mark Whorwood, CEO of Tyree NZ, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “This power transformer is one of many Tyree NZ will supply to the local market over the next year. Our growing team of specialists is proud to support Kiwi customers with high-quality transformer solutions.”
This collaboration between Tyree NZ, Connetics, and Orion reflects ongoing investment in New Zealand’s power infrastructure, ensuring a stable and efficient energy supply for the South Island.
